After briefly discussing the nature of those specialised and more and more widespread units and the forces that have given rise to them, the article critiques a few of the unique mental-health-associated points they present, together with the massive literature that exists on the detrimental psychological results of isolation and the unusually excessive percentage of mentally sick prisoners who are confined there. It ends with a short dialogue of current caselaw that addresses some of these mental well being issues and suggests that the courts, although in some methods appropriately solicitous of the plight of mentally ill supermax prisoners, have neglected some of the broader psychological problems these units create.
